Subject: A Horse
Date: 1999
When I was 14-15, I took him over to the house of a neighbor who liked to see my work. He was my first REALLY GOOD equine painting.
There was a lady visiting her, and she fell in love with Jasper, she offered to buy him on the spot. I apologized, and said that since he was the first horse I got right, I wasn't going to sell him.
She ended up begging to buy him. She wanted him for her husband. Apparently it looked like a horse he had as a boy. But, I was stubborn. I left my neighbor's house, while she was telling her friend to let it go.
I was walking across the yard (we shared a yard) to my place, when I heard from behind me:
"Wait! Victoria! Miss! Wait!? Please!"
I looked, and that woman was running across the rocky, stick-ridden grass, with nothing on her feet, but pantyhose.
She was waving her check-book at me.
She shouted that I could fill out the amount, any price. Meanwhile, my neighbor was standing on her porch doubled-over laughing. Because when I saw the woman after me, I clutched my painting more tightly to my chest (mind you, it was framed, with glass, 16" x 20", and I was running on uneven ground, looking behind me).
I finally got to my house, still shouting that he wasn't for sale, and ran up the steps, into the house and slammed the door.
My mom asked why I was looking so panicked and then she heard the woman start to knock.... well.... pound, on our door.
I muttered something about needing to put Jasper away and left, when I came back, my mom was talking to the woman.
Saying that she was very sorry, but if I said I didn't want to sell it, she couldn't make me. The woman insisted on trying to make us take a blank check.... My mom asked me if I was absolutely sure I didn't want to sell him. I just nodded. Still somewhat breathless.
Finally my mother got her to leave and I explained.
After that, I never went over there to show my neighbor a painting again unless I made sure that woman wasn't there.
I quite honestly was under the impression that she was insane. I loved him. But I honestly didn't think he was worth that display of insanity.
